Available Cats

You can start the adoption process by filling out our I'm Interested form or calling our cat coordinator at 503-284-8768.

All of our cats live with volunteers in a foster home where we evaluate them to find out how they interact with people and other pets. Knowing these personality traits helps us choose the best families for our cats, and helps you choose the cat that's perfect for you. All cats are FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) negative and have been spayed or neutered.

Think you want a kitten? Everyone wants a cute kitten, but kittens grow up rapidly. At 6 months they are not nearly as cute as they were at 8 weeks. They are fully grown at 1 year and can live over 20 years. If you think you want a kitten, ask yourself these questions.

Please note: Due to our adoption process, cats are available for adoption in Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, and Clark counties only.

Some of our cats have YouTube videos where you can see them in action:

Chico

My name is Chico and I'm told that I am a very special kitty who needs a special home. I lived a hard life starting out, and only recently discovered the comforts and joys of being an indoor cat after my foster mom noticed me wandering around her neighborhood. As a result of my years taking care of myself outside, I contracted Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Having FIV means that I have a compromised immune system, but with lots of good care, food, and love, I will live a very long and healthy life.

Since I was rescued off the street, my foster mom doesn’t know exactly when I was born, but the vet guesses that it was sometime in 2006. Nonetheless, I have maintained my kittenish ways and I love to play!! One of my favorite new things about being an indoor kitty is sleeping on the bed with my people and I will want to do that in my new forever home, too. I don't take up much room and I am very quiet, so I promise not to bother your sleep.

Since moving in with my foster parents, I have discovered that I love people! I want to be close to them, and often follow my foster mom around the house, just waiting for pets and attention. She says I'm about the sweetest cat she's ever met and that whoever adopts me will be the luckiest person ever. I can’t stay with her forever, though, because the other cats get a little jealous that I get so much attention. After all, I am a handsome boy and quite the charmer. I have pale green eyes and a sleek and shiny tabby coat. I keep myself very clean (sometimes I groom a little too much and I end up a little bare of hair in places, but I do it less now that I feel more secure in my home).

My new family should know that I have special food that I eat that prevents me from getting crystals in my urine, which is very painful and dangerous. It's important that I stay on my special diet for the rest of my life so that I don't have to go through that ever again. I have a lot of love to give and I think it makes up for my special needs. I know there is someone out there for me. Could it be you?

I am neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all of my vaccines, of course! If you’d like to meet me, please fill out our I'm Interested form or call 503-239-5087.

Bob

Bob is a small cat with a big personality. Born in March of 2005, this gray and white guy has tons of energy and lots of love to give. Bob has a lot to say and isn’t shy about saying it.… especially around mealtime when he’ll tell you he wants his food now. He has a wide nose that makes him look very exotic (possibly hinting at some Siamese ancestry). His tail is very long and skinny, which he thinks makes him more aerodynamic for running around the house.

Bob is quite frisky and playful. He gets along well with other cats, and seems to really appreciate their company. They enjoy chasing each other around the house, swatting and wrestling. Bob is often the instigator of playtime, and while he’s quite frisky, he’s also very gentle and tolerant with his foster siblings. His #1 favorite play activity is Fetch, which he is happy to play for hours at a time. Bob’s #2 favorite play activity is Chase the Laser Light. When his people aren’t available to play with, Bob has been known to start playtime on his own with his toy mice, balls, string toys, and feet. Yes, feet. While he wrestles with your feet, he is nice enough not to use claws or teeth.

Bob was not a big fan of being held when he first came to us, but seems to be warming up to the idea of love and attention. He enjoys having a spot of his own on the bed each night, and sometimes surprises his foster mom by creeping close to her face and gazing at her until she wakes up. Perhaps he’s telepathically trying to tell her to “wake up and play fetch now, please!”

Loud noises or sudden movement sometimes startle Bob a bit, so a home with young kids would not be a good fit for him. We think he will prefer having a kitty playmate, especially if his people are not around a lot. Bob is microchipped and neutered, and all set to settle in to a new forever home. If you’d like to meet this playful boy, please fill out our I'm Interested form or call 503-284-8768.

Lorenzo & Paloma

Born in April of 2005, Lorenzo and Paloma are a brother-sister pair who have been through quite a lot lately. Their human mom had to give them up due to health issues and they are a little confused as to why she is not with them anymore. They were used to a very quiet life and a comfy lap to rest in whenever they wanted, and they would like to find that again in their new home, please.

Lorenzo cannot resist a cozy lap and cuddle despite all of the changes in his life, and took to his foster mom right away. He is a gentle boy who has a low purr and a lot of love to give. While he looks Siamese, he is not overly chatty but does love to be wherever his people are.

Paloma is a quiet, unassuming girl. It takes a little coaxing, but once convinced you have nothing but her best interest at heart, she will purr and roll over for a big belly rub. “Hanging out” is her favorite activity, and she particularly loves to lie in bed with her people or sit on the sofa and enjoy a good book or movie night.

We predict that this gorgeous pair will blossom once they are in a home of their own getting plenty of attention and love. They are up to date on their vaccines, are microchipped, and are all set to make their new people very happy. If you’re interested in meeting these quietly loving siblings, please fill out our I'm interested form.

Smokey Joe

Smokey Joe’s foster mom says:

“When Smokey Joe showed up on our front porch looking for a meal, he was a very scared boy. He would run as soon as he noticed us watching him, but kept coming back for another meal. After realizing that he hadn’t been fixed, we took Smokey in to be neutered and vaccinated, and released him again with plans to continue feeding him if he returned to our porch.

Despite his visit to the vet, Smokey Joe kept coming back to our porch for more meals. We were caught by surprise a couple of months after his vet visit when Smokey very cautiously let us touch him. From that moment on, Smokey never looked back and has become everyone’s best friend. He is a very affectionate gentle giant who appreciates a warm lap to sit on. If I stop petting him and try to walk away before he’s done getting pets, he will tap me with his paw as if to say, “Hey, get back here, I'm not done yet!”

Smokey has beautiful pale green eyes and when he looks at you it is as if he is looking right in to your soul. A couple of Smokey’s favorite pastimes include curling up in his fleece bed by the window to watch the world go by, and spending time with his favorite people (pretty much anyone who will give him some love and attention).”

Smokey Joe was born in August of 2007, and is an only-child of a cat who will appreciate a permanent home where he can be the star and get all the love and attention. He is vaccinated, microchipped, and, as we mentioned, neutered. If you’re interested in meeting this gentle giant who recently discovered the wonders of an indoor home after wandering the streets, please fill out our I'm interested form.

Lorenzo, Maurice, Sparkle, & Daffodil

This litter of gorgeous cats was rescued from a vacant lot on a rainy spring day. The kittens were found drenched, smelly, and terrified. We gathered the two long-haired buff cats (Daffodil and Maurice) and two short-haired cats; one solid gray (Lorenzo) and one tortoiseshell (Sparkle) and took them straight to the vet for check-ups and spay/neuter surgeries.

These kitties are recovering well from their ordeal, and their personalities are starting to come out. While all are frisky, happy, and affectionate, each has his or her own special qualities.

Sparkle is the protector of this tribe. She looks like a solid gray cat rolled in gold dust, and will often sit back and wait while the other three wear themselves out playing with a toy. Like a mom who eats only after the kids have had their fill, she will gently approach the toy and play a bit by herself while the others curl up and snooze. She is a careful observer of all that transpires, watching quietly with her big eyes and dainty purr. Sparkle's littermates look to her when confronted with something new, and they take turns cuddling with her.

Lorenzo is a handsome gray, solid in color and in build. He has stunning green eyes and a lush coat that invites stroking. He is still growing into his body and hasn't developed the agility necessary to operate it. He's so eager for tummy rubs that he'll flop and roll on any surface, even if it's elevated and not quite big enough to hold him. Crash! But he bounces up and comes right back for more. He has a big, rumbly purr and loves to give head butts and Eskimo kisses. Lorenzo is an adorable goofy hunk.

Maurice has a sweet face and personality to match. He was the most terrified of the group when he first came to us and spent several days hiding in a box, quivering with fear. But once he warmed up, he REALLY warmed up! He's now the first to greet a visitor, and reach up to tap a knee to confirm that he's welcome to jump into a lap. Maurice is very vigorous when he plays but takes frequent breaks to come back for ear scratches and tummy rubs. If he can get access, Maurice will also perch happily on a shoulder and nibble on your hair. Maurice is the the Mr. Congeniality in this family.

Daffodil is a lovely orange cat, and she looks like a slightly smaller version of Maurice. She has an independent streak and is flirty, feisty, and has fabulous fluffy tufts in her ears. She's a bit of a bratty little sister who doesn't have much patience with quiet lap-sitting at this stage in her life, but she loves social interaction, and will no doubt learn to enjoy it more as she grows up. She's not shy about shoving the rest of the gang out of the way if she wants first shot at dinner or a new toy. Daffodil has a beautiful face, a mind of her own, and a huge purr.

Although these kitties each have their own individual personalities, they do share a few traits. They all love being groomed and expect it daily. They are very active (but Maurice and Daffodil especially love to pounce on anything that moves). And while Daffodil sometimes prefers to go her own way, even she is happy to curl up on a comfortable lap when it's time for a cozy nap, just like her brothers and sister.

Sparkle, Maurice, Lorenzo, and Daffodil love to be around other cats and, while they have not been dog-tested yet, they seem to love all people, including children. This group has become very bonded through their ordeal, and will be happiest placed as pairs in their permanent homes. They are microchipped and fixed, and are ready to meet their new families. Zoyya

The first thing you’ll notice about Zoyya is her striking sea-green eyes. We think this exotic beauty was born sometime in 2004, and she is in excellent health. Zoyya is friendly and loving. She enjoys lap time and is content to nap in her own cozy bed during the workday. She seems to be interested in sharing the bed at night as well, although right now she has to fight her way through the other foster cats to get there.

Zoyya was abandoned last year when her people moved away, and she was left to fend for herself outside an apartment complex. Fortunately, Zoyya stuck close to home and did a good job surviving with the help of a kind lady who fed her and gave her a place to sleep. She came to ARCF after her caretaker called to ask for help, fearing for her safety.

Zoyya is well socialized and it is obvious that someone once loved her. She’s not “shy” per se, but is selective about allowing strangers to touch her. Once she gets to know you, though, she is happy to have you manage the laser light or jerk her string toys around for her to chase.

Zoyya is definitely a little princess: demur and dainty, but she knows what she wants and is happy to request it, especially when it comes to playtime. And she is so happy to be living inside again that she purrs often (but always in a very ladylike manner). She can be startled by sudden movements or loud noises, so she will prefer a fairly calm household. No dogs for her, please, but she would be fine with a laidback kitty pal.

Zoyya has had all of her vaccinations, is microchipped, and recently had a dental exam and cleaning. If you’d like to meet this demure princess, please fill out our I'm interested form.

Simon & Anna

Born in October of 2009, Simon and Anna began their lives outdoors, but were taken in by ARCF when they were about five months old. Since then, they have learned all about the joys of indoor life.

Both Simon and Anna were shy when they first came to ARCF, but they have come to trust humans they know, and are enjoying being spoiled and loved. They look forward to finding a permanent home with experienced cat people who will patiently give them time and attention as they continue to blossom.

Anna greets her foster mom each day with a quiet meow. She loves to be petted while she lies on her cat tree, rolling over for belly rubs periodically. While she doesn’t exactly seek out cuddles, Anna likes to circle her people for drive-by pets and rubs. She is interested in watching birds and squirrels from her window and even says hello to the cats that walk by her window.

Simon has the overly handsome good looks of a chocolate Siamese but doesn’t seem to have a Siamese personality, as he is quiet and not very talkative. Simon still keeps to himself a bit, but will accept a cuddle now and then. He loves to plant himself near his foster mom or in his green tube, where he is happy to accept pets and love. Simon loves his toys and likes scratching on a newly cat-nipped scratching post.

It has taken Simon and Anna some time to learn to play but now they simply love to jump and swat at flying toys. They enjoy playing together and can often be found hanging out on a cat tree together. Although not especially bonded, they both definitely want a cat buddy in their permanent home.

Simon and Anna are good eaters and appreciate their daily doses of wet food and will eat pounce treats out of your hand. They have impeccable litter box habits. They are also lovely adolescents: past the crazy kitten stage and are ready to settle into a calm, patient, and loving home. If you are interested in meeting this charming pair, please fill out our I'm Interested form.

Raisin & Rumple

Rumple and Raisin are a bit of an odd couple; they came to us from different situations and have very different personalities, but they have become quite good friends, and would like to find a home where they can live together forever.

Raisin is our favorite little cowgirl; she's spunky, independent, playful, loving, and loyal, and she always wears the cutest outfit! As with many of our rescued cats, we don't know exactly when Raisin was born, but our best guess is 2006. Her coloring is called chocolate point and she's at least part Siamese—look at those blue eyes! Her tail is a bit shorter than normal, because it has a kink about halfway up that makes a 45-degree angle, and another little kink right at the tip. It's very cute! She's a compact little bundle of personality and pizzazz.

Rumple was born about a year ago (2009). He also has gorgeous blue eyes, and his cream and blue-point coloring indicates some Himalayan genes in his background. His coat is medium length and very soft. Rumple is a long and lanky guy but still has some growing to do. His demeanor is much more reserved, and although he enjoys a little mouse-chasing from time to time, Rumple is really a wonderful companion for couch-sitting and other relaxing activities. His purring presence is very peaceful.

Raisin is very smart and still has a lot of kitten energy, so she needs a family who has time to play with her every day to keep her mind stimulated and her body active. It's not difficult, because she loves being around people, and especially enjoys those who will pick up a toy and play with her.

Raisin enjoys meeting other cats, but Rumple was not crazy about having a roommate at first, and spurned her advances with a bop on the head. She was determined to win him over, however, and he soon succumbed to her charms. Although she's a busy and curious girl, Raisin also enjoys lap time. Rumple prefers lap time to most anything else, and he's very content to sit and watch Raisin wear herself out before she joins him for a wash-up, a cuddle, and a nap.

Both Raisin and Rumple have perfect house manners and litter box habits. They expect and enjoy daily combing, and are easygoing about nail trims. Both have been fixed, vaccinated, and microchipped. Raisin also recently had a dental cleaning. If you'd like to meet this well-rounded pair, please fill out our I'm interested form.

Ray

Ray is a long and lanky boy who was born in June of 2005. As a 4-year-old, he has matured just enough to be well-mannered but hasn’t lost his “inner kitten.” If you're looking for a chatty cat, Ray sings for his supper. He has a funny meow that's long and slightly melodic, and he isn't afraid to use it when he is hungry or just wants some love. He is not a constant talker but when he has something to say, he does love a good listener! He loves to hear you talk as well, so the conversations are fun!

Ray loves people but is not so crazy about other animals. While not aggressive, Ray has made it clear that people are his favorite – other cats or dogs are not. He likes anything having to do with his people, including sitting in a lap, couch time, sleeping on or near the bed, tummy rubs, and play time with toys.

Ray came to ARCF after his mom passed away in 2009, and has been recovering from the trauma of losing her and his home. He seems to appreciate a strong routine so he knows what to expect at all times. He used to be an indoor/outdoor cat and will probably be happiest in a home where he can come and go at will. Given all of the stress that he has been through over the past few months, we think that Ray will blossom in a permanent home with a cat-savvy person or family who have plenty of love, attention, and patience.

Ray is a big love who simply adores attention, affection, and lots of pets! He has perfected the art of bopping his head against people for required love and attention time. For such a big boy, Ray has a soft purr that he can’t contain when he’s content and pleased. He is a very gentle boy who is looking for companionship and a loving home.

Ray is up to date on his vaccines and is neutered. If you're interested in meeting this giant lovebug, please fill out our I'm Interested form or call 503-284-8768.

Snowball

Imagine a boy who is always ready to cuddle, to chat, or to play. Can you see him? It’s Snowball! (You may have seen our poll to re-name Shadow on our Facebook page. Our FB fans weighed in, and "Snowball" is the winner.)

Born in July of 2008, Snowball can be shy with new people, but simply loves attention and once he comes out of his shell he is a great companion. He is not needy, but checks in regularly with his people to make sure they’re not missing him too much. If it’s been a while since the last cuddle, Snowball is happy to flop down wherever he is and roll over for pets and love. His current favorite spot to “flop” is his foster mom’s bed, but he’ll do it pretty much anywhere for a chance at pets. He likes to check in with his foster mom from time to time in her office, get some pets, and steal and hide her eraser. Did we mention he’s just a little bit mischievous? If Snowball can’t find her, he’ll send out a loud meow until she calls back “Here I am!” After a few pets he’s off again to find new amusement and fun.

Snowball has a beautiful athletic body with a very long tail. His fur is very shiny and he keeps himself immaculately clean. He is faithful about using his scratching posts. He likes to sleep on the bed, and has taken to waking up with his foster mom for a nice quiet cuddle before she gets out of bed and starts her day. He is true to the saying that black cats bond strongly.

Some of Snowball’s favorite things include sitting in front of an open window to watch birds and smell the fresh air, toys on string that can dance and jump (with human assistance), and being curled up in a tight ball and held like a baby. Snowball also loves the laser light and will chase it endlessly, scrambling to capture the red dot.

Snowball also likes other cats very much and is looking for a home where he can continue to have the kitty camaraderie that he currently enjoys with his fellow foster cats. He likes to keep the old kodger kitty company at night and plays chase and pounce with the other young cat during the day. He is also completely comfortable with dogs. Snowball is neutered, microchipped, and current on all of his vaccines. If you’re interested in meeting this lovely boy, please fill out our I'm Interested form.

Mr. O'Malley & Smudge

Mr. O'Malley is quite the mellow tuxedo fellow. He is about a year and a half old, a friendly lap cat with a very gentlemanly nature. Although he is cautious of strangers, once he gets to know you, he will chat in soft meows. With a good scratch and cuddle, he will purr loud enough to hear across the room. He is happy keeping you company around the house, enjoying your lap, and kneading happily while cuddling, He will curl up on the bed at night just to be near you. Mr. O'Malley plays well with other cats, but does not like to roughhouse, and is past his maniac kitten phase.

Smudge is a quiet, ladylike girl born sometime in 2005 or 2006 who will squeeze her way into your heart in short order. She is very shy of strangers but loves nothing more than a good scratch and cuddle with people she knows and is comfy with. Smudge is playful, but will not compete with other cats for attention or toys. Smudge came to us very underweight and ill, so she was overindulged a bit through no fault of her own. She is on a diet now and expects to slim down to a happy, healthy weight.

Although these two look like they must be related, they are not. However, their well-behaved and loving natures make them the perfect pair for a quiet home.

O'Malley and Smudge have both been microchipped and altered, and are up to date on all of their vaccines. If you would like to meet this look-alike duo, please fill out our I'm Interested form.

Eliza Doolittle

Eliza Doolittle is the poster kitty for lap cats! And who could believe that this affectionate lap cat is actually living a rag-to-riches story?

We think that Eliza Doolittle was born sometime around May of 2007. She lived on the streets for quite some time before she decided to post herself in front of an ARCF volunteer's home. After she picked us, she sat in the front yard and cried and cried to come in. Once inside, this ragged street waif settled right into a domesticated lifestyle. Eliza was not sure at first about all of the whiskers in her new home (Eliza prefers the companionship of people), but as time has gone on, she has been caught sleeping on the same bed and watching the squirrels from the back of the sofa with some of her cat peers. Still, Eliza has made it clear that she is not particularly looking for a cat companion and would be most content as an only child.

Eliza enjoys being affectionate, so she will need people who have time after work and on weekends to spend with her. While Eliza is definitely a lap cat, she doesn't particularly care for being picked up, and small children would likely not be very happy about that. She is a definite lap cat, however, and once you sit down it's not long before she comes to investigate to see if it's time to settle down in your lap (and anytime is the right time whenever everything is quiet and calm). As soon as she sits down, it's time to start with the petting, please! When you stop, out comes the gentle tap, tap, tap of a soft paw to let you know the Liza is definitely not done with the petting session. A good combing would be appreciated as well, please.

Liza is on the small side and a dainty eater. She’s not much of a talker and prefers to say everything with her eyes. Estimated to be born in May of 2007, Eliza is spayed and has had her vaccines.

If you would like to meet this rags-to-riches girl, fill out our I'm Interested form or call 503-284-8768.
